Nestled in the serene hills of Darjeeling, Mirik is a calm, quaint hill town at an altitude of 5,000 feet, located in between Siliguri and Darjeeling (49km from Darjeeling & 52 km from Siliguri). Interestingly the name, Mirik derives from the Lepcha words Mir-Yok meaning ‘place burnt by fire’. Its reputation as a holiday destination stems from the fact that it provides stupendous views of the Himalayas and Mount Kanchenjunga can be spotted in all its glory from the sunrise point here.
The centre of attraction in Mirik, is Sumendu Lake (4,900 feet), surrounded by a garden named Savitri Pushpaudyan (named after Savitri Thapa, an INA martyr) on one side and pine trees on the other, linked together by a footbridge called Indreni Pool (named after Indreni Thapa, another INA). The nearly 3.5 km-long road which encircles the lake is perfect for long walks and offers a picturesque view of Mt Kanchenjunga.
The highest point in Mirik is Boker Monastery, at an altitude of about 5,800 ft. Established in 1984 by Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche, the monastery is home to about 500 monks who practise and propagate the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. It also has a monastic school named Sherda.
There are about eight Tea Gardens in Mirik area and Thurbo T.E, one of the most prominent tea estates is in vicinity of Sumendu lake. Ramitey Dara is a hill that offers beautiful views of snow-capped mountains and the plains of Mirik.
